GW2 University of Bath

Sun-11-November-2007

On a fine day with the ground firm, 30 Stroud Athletes descended on Bath to do battle in the 2nd Gwent League meeting of the season.

The novice girls started the day with Cailin Tootell and Libbie Brown-47th and 52nd.

The under 13 boys had a good team performance led by new team member William Paulson-2nd, Xander Brown-10th and Keelan Tootel-22nd.

Imogen Briscoe was the only Stroud runner but ran well for 10th place in the under 13 girls race.

Perhaps the best team performances came from the under 15 boys with Tom Curr and Tom Purnell 1st and 2nd but well supported by James Gardner-12th, Jordan Frapwell-17th and Oliver Starkey-31st

Thea Marshall started too quickly in the under 15 girls race and tired but showed determination to finish in a still very good 21st place.

The under 17 and under 20 men ran in a combined race, Ander Russell(u20) ran a superb race to pull away and win, with Matt Withey(u17)-11th and Carl Frapwell(u20)-18th.

The Senior Ladies put out a very good team with Louise Durman, returning to Stroud colours, a brilliant 2nd. The race was won by a clear margin by Stroud athlete Rachel Felton running for her 1st claim club Shaftesbury on the day. Strong performances from Jo Fifield-28th, Sally Frapwell-36th, returning team members Alison Cockcroft-43rd and Kathryn Morton-73rd with Chrissie Griffiths-79th and newcomer Jane Townsend-105th.

In the finale, the Senior men had several team members missing through illness and injury. The team was led home by another returnee Martin Humphreys in 66th place with Ian Roberts-159th, Chris Young-227th, Geoff Trueman-236th and new team members Dave Grant-261st and Tim Walton-287th.

Stroud athlete Tom Russell was a close 2nd, though running for his university team on the day

Older (over 35 men and women) athletes should welcome the opportunity to run in a championship race, against their own rather than young gazelles. I have distributed entry form to all those who I thought might be interested but will put some copies on the notice board

If we develop more general interest it would be good to promote club teams in some open XC events next season.
