Leg 1:
Chipping Campden To Stanway House,
Stanway: 12 Miles 414 Metres Ascent |
|
10 miles of the most beautiful miles
of the Cotswold Way, largely across
open fields surrounded by dry stone
walls. It includes Dovers Hill and
Broadway tower viewpoints and a
quick pass through 2 of the
Cotswolds' finest vilages (Wood
Stanway and Broadway). The finish is
through the old parkland at Stanway
House to complete a leg that is
worth rising at 6:45am for |
Leg 2:
Stanway House, Stanway To Club
House, Cleeve Common
12.5 Miles -
553 Metres Ascent |
| Dominated by 2 huge climbs. One in
the early stages above Hailes Abbey
and the second rising from Sudeley
Castle to Belas Knapp and Cleeve
Common through various crops. The
final section across Cleve Common is
a delight with a crossing of a
surprisingly sharp river valley
halfway. At 12.5 miles it is the
toughest leg but does tend to avoid
the heat of the day |
Leg 3:
Club House, Cleeve Common To
A435/A436 Seven Springs
8.5 Miles -
370 Metres Ascent |
| Fine views from Cleve Common and a
long off-road descent to the
Reservoir Inn are the benefits in
advance of the long climb to Wistley
Hill (take heart it is the only
climb). The finish is
disappointingly through forest
trails and well away from the
Cotswold escarpment.ilway line |
Leg 4:
A435/A436 Seven Springs To Royal
William, Cranham Corner
12.5 Miles -
372 Metres Ascent |
| Dramatic route, barely leaving the
Cotswold escarpment, as it passes
Leckhampton Hill, Crickley Hill,
Birdlip Hill and Coopers Hill (sadly
it skirts the bottom of the heavily
wooded Kite's Hill). Underfoot the
going tends from firm to hard, with
only short vegitation apart from the
stingers. Has a distinction of
finishing at a pub when it arrives
at the Royal William |
Leg 5:
Royal William, Cranham Corner To
Ebley Mill, Stroud:
12.5 Miles - 284
Metres Ascent |
| Starts along the side of the
Painswick Golf Course, missing out
the summit of Painswick Beacon and
the best of the views before
descending into Painswick. Field
tracks cross the Washbrook Valley
and start the climb into a fine
section alternating between woodland
and fine views. From the 4 mile
point onwards it's downhill all the
way to the canal a mile from the
finish. The dash along the old canal
towpath is out of keeping with the
rest of the leg and compensates the
road runners for what they lost on
the descent |
Leg 6:
Ebley Mill Stroud To Hill Road,
Dursley
9 Miles - 530 Metres Ascent |
| It's only 8 miles but this leg is
packed with hills. Selsley Common
with an open summit is followed by
wide bridleways on a long wooded
ridge eventually opening onto the
Coaley Peak hilltop meadow. A stoney
descent leaves the main Cotswold
ridge to attack Cam Long Down.
Running west along the Down gives
time to take in the full panarama of
the Severn estuary, Forest of Dean
and Brecons mountains beyond. A
quick descent and ascent moves the
route momentarily onto the very tip
of Cam Peak. The final mile is
mostly roads to the finish in
Dursley |
Leg 7:
Hill Road, Dursley To Opp. St Mary’s
Church, Wotton-U-Edge
7 Miles - 275
Metres Ascent |
| Takes a wooded climb to the summit
of Stinchcombe Hill and a horseshoe
route around the hilltop golf
course. Eventually the route plunges
through a steep woodland track and
farm fields to Waterley Bottom. A
second long climb leads via North
Nibley and a long staircase to
Tyndale's monument. A flattish
section forms the prelude to the
final descent to St Mary's Church in
Wotton-Under-Edge. |
Leg 8:
Valley Road, Wotton-U-Edge To Dog
Inn, Old Sodbury
2 Miles - 405
Metres Ascent |
| The afternoon heat can make this
almost entirely off-road leg tougher
than the mighty leg 2. Most of the
paths are not so well frequented as
the course rolls over low hills
through Alderley, Hawkesbury-Upton
and Horton. The final sting is the
climb to Sodbury Camp Hill Fort,
before descending down towards the
finish at Old Sodbury |
Leg 9:
Dog Inn, Old Sodbury To Cold Ashton
9 Miles - 250 Metres Ascent |
| This is neither in the Cotwolds nor
particularly off-road after a rogue
landowner got away with blocking the
proper route |
Leg 10:
Greenway Lane, Cold Ashton To Bath
Abbey
10 Miles - 246 Metres Ascent |
| ????? it's a mystery or text is on
its's way!!! |
