Cotswold Way Relay Race

A 10 stage relay for senior, veteran, women and mixed (with 3 or more women) teams along 105.5 miles of waymarked trail between Chipping Campden and Bath

The results are determined by adding together the times for each leg

Leg 1:
Chipping Campden To Stanway House, Stanway: 12 Miles 414  Metres Ascent

10 miles of the most beautiful miles of the Cotswold Way, largely across open fields surrounded by dry stone walls. It includes Dovers Hill and Broadway tower viewpoints and a quick pass through 2 of the Cotswolds' finest vilages (Wood Stanway and Broadway). The finish is through the old parkland at Stanway House to complete a leg that is worth rising at 6:45am for

Leg 2:
Stanway House, Stanway To Club House, Cleeve Common
12.5 Miles - 553  Metres Ascent
Dominated by 2 huge climbs. One in the early stages above Hailes Abbey and the second rising from Sudeley Castle to Belas Knapp and Cleeve Common through various crops. The final section across Cleve Common is a delight with a crossing of a surprisingly sharp river valley halfway. At 12.5 miles it is the toughest leg but does tend to avoid the heat of the day

Club House, Cleeve Common To A435/A436 Seven Springs
8.5 Miles - 370  Metres Ascent
Fine views from Cleve Common and a long off-road descent to the Reservoir Inn are the benefits in advance of the long climb to Wistley Hill (take heart it is the only climb). The finish is disappointingly through forest trails and well away from the Cotswold escarpment.ilway line

Leg 4:
A435/A436 Seven Springs To Royal William, Cranham Corner
12.5 Miles - 372  Metres Ascent

Dramatic route, barely leaving the Cotswold escarpment, as it passes Leckhampton Hill, Crickley Hill, Birdlip Hill and Coopers Hill (sadly it skirts the bottom of the heavily wooded Kite's Hill). Underfoot the going tends from firm to hard, with only short vegitation apart from the stingers. Has a distinction of finishing at a pub when it arrives at the Royal William
Leg 5:
Royal William, Cranham Corner To Ebley Mill, Stroud:
12.5 Miles - 284  Metres Ascent
Starts along the side of the Painswick Golf Course, missing out the summit of Painswick Beacon and the best of the views before descending into Painswick. Field tracks cross the Washbrook Valley and start the climb into a fine section alternating between woodland and fine views. From the 4 mile point onwards it's downhill all the way to the canal a mile from the finish. The dash along the old canal towpath is out of keeping with the rest of the leg and compensates the road runners for what they lost on the descent
Leg 6:
Ebley Mill Stroud To Hill Road, Dursley
9 Miles - 530  Metres Ascent
It's only 8 miles but this leg is packed with hills. Selsley Common with an open summit is followed by wide bridleways on a long wooded ridge eventually opening onto the Coaley Peak hilltop meadow. A stoney descent leaves the main Cotswold ridge to attack Cam Long Down. Running west along the Down gives time to take in the full panarama of the Severn estuary, Forest of Dean and Brecons mountains beyond. A quick descent and ascent moves the route momentarily onto the very tip of Cam Peak. The final mile is mostly roads to the finish in Dursley
Leg 7:
Hill Road, Dursley To Opp. St Mary’s Church, Wotton-U-Edge
7 Miles - 275  Metres Ascent
Takes a wooded climb to the summit of Stinchcombe Hill and a horseshoe route around the hilltop golf course. Eventually the route plunges through a steep woodland track and farm fields to Waterley Bottom. A second long climb leads via North Nibley and a long staircase to Tyndale's monument. A flattish section forms the prelude to the final descent to St Mary's Church in Wotton-Under-Edge.
Leg 8:
Valley Road, Wotton-U-Edge To Dog Inn, Old Sodbury
2 Miles - 405  Metres Ascent
The afternoon heat can make this almost entirely off-road leg tougher than the mighty leg 2. Most of the paths are not so well frequented as the course rolls over low hills through Alderley, Hawkesbury-Upton and Horton. The final sting is the climb to Sodbury Camp Hill Fort, before descending down towards the finish at Old Sodbury
Leg 9:
Dog Inn, Old Sodbury To Cold Ashton
9 Miles - 250  Metres Ascent
This is neither in the Cotwolds nor particularly off-road after a rogue landowner got away with blocking the proper route

Leg 10:
Greenway Lane, Cold Ashton To Bath Abbey
10 Miles - 246  Metres Ascent
