Great Britian Call Upon Tom Russell

Tom Russell (Stroud and District AC), who stepped in for Dirrane, finished the trial barely a stride behind Ashton having narrowly missed selection for the Junior team last year. Tom Ran brilliantly in Italy on Sunday in the biggest race of his career to date.

Russell, studying maths and philosophy at Bristol University and coached by his father Gordon, said: “It will be a good experience. I was aware it was likely to happen but it was getting so close in the first place that surprised me. I didn’t think I was that fit. It was just a case of ‘run the trial and see how you get on’.U“It’s nice because I was first reserve for the Juniors last year, which annoyed me a bit. It’s a nice relief to get in the team this time.”

Tom Russell did himself proud, by being the 4th British runner home and the last scoring runner, leaving two selected runners behind him not scoring, finishing 40th in 24:08. He said: “I’m really pleased. I didn’t have any expectations. The start was absolutely brutal. I looked back after the first kilometre and saw only a couple behind me [in a field on 82, of whom four did not finish.] It was a question of working through and it was great to get in the scoring team. I have never been in a race like that in my life.”

Great Britain Junior men finished 5th, only 11 points off a bronze medal.
