Regents Park (London) 10K Winter Grand Prix Series
31-Mar-2010 18:50 PM
Stroud & District AC member Dave Farmer writes:

In early March I completed the sixth & last race of the Regents Park (London) 10K Winter Grand Prix Series. I finished first Over-60 in 42-59 and won the overall V60 series title. Based on points scored in respective age groups, I finished third in the overall Grand Prix.

Race numbers varied between 200-400 this year, and as the organiser commented, this was perhaps the worst year for weather in the history of the series (Ie. in many years!).

... cheers Dave Farmer (former V55 Nat.Age Group Champ + Intl. in Duathlon)

Forest Of Dean Half Marathon - 28th Mar 2010
28-Mar-2010 17:00 PM
Given what could have been a nightmare scenario of 2300 runners and a water logged parking field, the dry period immediately before the race couldn't have come at a better time. Conditions were near perfect, with only small areas of mud and wet that could be easily navigated, or for the hardened runner simply run though.

The course had undergone some significant changes to the start and finish this year, with the event starting and finishing at Speech House.
After approximately 2km of tarmac, a hard right turn took us into the forest and a steep descent down approximately 120m to 'Cannop Ponds'. Unfortunately what goes down has to come up, so for about the next 6.5km the athletes then have to climb back up about 150m on a gentle gradient. From there, the woodland track meanders climbing and falling until the end of the race, which was very much welcomed!

A well organised and marshalled race with plenty of spectators cheering the competitors on.

32 runners from Stroud AC ventured into the Forest risking the threat of being chased by wild bore. Rob Gornall went out hard and ended up finishing in overall 4th position but 1st Male Vet 40 with a time of 1:19:25. Lee Christmas finished in a strong time of 01:27:56 despite coming back from injury.

Alan Dodd - 7th Mar 2010
10-Mar-2010 18:53 PM
It is with sad regret that Alan Dodd passed away on Sunday. He was a long serving member of the club who introduced many beginners to running and was the Club "kit man" for many years.

There will be a card offering condolences to his family being passed around for signatures at training on Tuesday and Thursday this week.

Update: The funeral will be at 2pm on 19th March at Gloucester Crematorium.
Hogweed Hilly Half - 14th March 2010
15-Mar-2010 18:40 PM
A bright, sunny day with a cold breeze around Horton Village Hall diverted competitors minds away from what they were about to endure. We walked, ambled and jogged the few hundred metres to the start without a care in the world. The race started with its usual flurries of ill prepared people and elbow jostling then after about a mile or so reality set in..quite early on for a race that is 13.109 miles long!

The race described in a 2006 Runner's World runner review as number 5 in the favourite half marathon category for the whole of Great Britain with 100% of voters saying that they would do it again loses marks in the "PB Potential" section. Not surprising really as you are faced with major climbs beginning at 1,5,8, and 12 miles - many people are walking by the time they reach the hill(!) between 9 and 10 miles!

The scenery is stupendous with views out across the Severn Vale lots of fields and farmsteads. The friendly marshals at the road junctions make a welcome change from the relentless push to the finish with cries of 'nearly at the top' and 'well done, you're doing great' hmm, must try harder to smile in future as they seemed like the words spoken to someone who is grimacing insanely and looking very, very tired! However, all of this didn't distract sufficiently enough from the task in hand…to get to the finish in more or less one piece.

The finish is awesome, did I mention the hills? Oh yes, just when you thought you'd reached the top of the mountain (we were climbing up Kilimanjaro weren't we?) I mean the course, there is a monster descent around 11 miles and when you'd recovered from shredding your quads there is another hill upwards just around 12 miles…OMG! Up that last pitch along a bit past a very nice church then another kamikaze dash down a steep hill past the 13 mile marker to the finish. I did try to do a warm down run honest, but somehow my legs didn't both want to go in the same direction.

The goody bag and medal seemed somehow superfluous after what must be one of the most challenging and consciousness raising of road races in the area - they say you can become instantly enlightened if you can endure sufficient pain; didn't work for me. Still there is always the tea and cakes…home cooking at its best. Just when I thought it was over I discovered that the shower heads in the men's changing rooms were all at different temperatures from scalding hot to ice, ice cold. Nothing like a good game of hop scotch after a monster of a race, eh?!
Did I mention the hills?

Mario McNamara won 1st MV50 (and wrote this article) and everyone I talked to agreed that in all probability, if they really couldn't think of something better to do, that they 'would have a go' again next year. Hmm, that lobotomy is looking appealing!

Gloucester 20Mile - 7th Mar 2010
07-Mar-2010 15:30 PM
The race was run on a cold and gloriously sunny day starting and finishing very close to the Waterwells Park & Ride, the race HQ being in the Severn Vale Sports Centre at Quedgeley.

The route consisted of an out and return leg from Waterwells taking runners onto an undulating 3 lap circuit which passed Gloucester Garden Centre and on towards Standish, before turning left towards Haresfield. The route encompassed sections of the Beacon 10K making its way back round to the garden centre for the remaining laps.

It is a new route for this popular race being run on flatish country roads with long sections of narrow lanes and a few testing undulations!

Mario McNamara won 2nd MV50 prize

Bourton 10K - 28th Feb 2010
01-Mar-2010 20:01 PM
In a race that could easily have not been if the weathermen had been correct, 22 Stroud & District Athletes took part in the Bourton 10K road race with some really strong performances being put in by the runners. The race consists of 2 laps of the village center, followed by country lanes heading out and back through the outskirts of Bourton, finishing with the dreaded 1 3/4 laps of the village center again. There were a large number of spectators to drive the runners on which was appreciated given the slightly damp conditions on the day.

Despite a large gap between 1st and 2nd place this year, Stroud's Dan Robinson's race record of 29:21 still stands, with the race being won this year in a time of 30:33.

This year finishers were awarded a bobble hat which was most appropriate given a cold breese that picked up towards the end of the event.

Castle Coombe Chilly 10k - 28th Feb 2010
01-Mar-2010 19:01 PM
There were 141 finishers in a race that was threatened with torrential rain and hurricane force winds. In the event the rain held off (mostly) and we all had to put up with strong winds on the far side of the track. 10k run was 3.4 race circuit laps and the on site café was a welcome haven after the race. It was a well organised and a very enjoyable event.

Mario McNamara was 4th overall and won first Male Vet 50 prize. Mario, Gill Tavner and Chrissie Griffiths won the 10K Club Challenge winning the team shield.

South West Schools Cross Country Championship
01-Mar-2010 19:01 PM
Stroud and District AC junior athletes travelled to Truro to represent Gloucestershire in the South West Schools Cross Country Championship. The U17 boy's team had 5 Stroud runners in the team of 6. Cornwall was considered one of the strongest Counties in the UK and was lead by the UK Champion Conner Robinson.

The Stroud runners were determined to take the race to the home county with Aaron Phelps pushing the early pace and Tom Purnell then took over and pushed Conner right to the finish to claim the individual Silver Medal and leading the county team to a Team Silver behind Cornwall.

Aaron was 2nd County runner home, followed by William Paulson in 3rd, Xander Brown in 5th, and James Gardner in 6th. In the U19 Boys Stroud Tom Curr and Ben Coldray were in Leeds running in the National clubs championship, this left Stroud Rob Galt to lead the county just missing out on the title by inches in a sprint finish. Andrew Watt was then 2nd county runner home in 10th. Jordan Frapwell had to retire early in the race.

Tom Parnell as the sole Stroud runner in the U15 boys had a solid run to finish 3rd County runner home. U19 girl Hannah Gornall dug very deep to finish 5th County runner home. U17 Girls again had Cornwall with the UK top girl to contend with. Amber Watson who won the County senior ladies title doggedly chased the Cornish runner but was unable to apply any pressure and had to settle for second. Imergen Briscoe ran strongly for 7th and will be a favourite for this title in 2011. U15 girl Lucy Gaudswaard attacked the course and was 2nd county runner home. Jessica Robbins the County U13 Champion was 6th County runner home.

English National Club Championships
01-Mar-2010 19:01 PM
Tom Curr the Midland Counties Champion revival continues with a Silver medal in the U17 men race held in Leeds over the weekend. Tom will now prepare to take on the U20s in the World Cross County Trials on the 13th March.

England Indoors Championships
01-Mar-2010 19:01 PM
Stroud AC Junior European 100m and 200m Champion Jennie Batten 17 entered the English U20 Championship 200m ranked No.1 in the UK. Jennie left with the gold medal, club record and the 3rd fastest senior time of the indoor season in the UK. An international vest cannot now be far away.

Ben Coldray smashed the club U20 1500m to finish 4th in the final, behind the Irish champion who broke the championship record.

Kacey Garraway 15 qualified for the English indoor U17Men Championships in both 60m and 200m, but decided to only run the 200m and gained further experience running a personnel best just missing the final. Kacey has another year at this age group and will be back in 2011 looking for a medal.
