It operates seven days a week and needs to raise in excess of £1 million a year. It is funded entirely through donations and is already one of the busiest Air Ambulances in the UK, and 'St John Ambulance' which is the country's leading first aid training organisation and first aid provider as well as being one of the largest youth movements.

All races with the exception of the Silver Mile can be entered either on-line or via a downloadable form (both available from this web site). The Silver Mile can only be entered via downloadable form.

Weston Super Mare - Tough Ten - 14th Feb 2010
19-Feb-2010 15:15 PM
The course had to be changed slightly this year because of the construction projects to rebuild the Grand Pier, enhance the sea defences and resurface the promenade and was slightly shorter at 9.6 miles, but still very well organized and marshaled. The race started on the beach with a short loop on firm but wet sand and then headed north along the Prom, round the back of the marine lake and along the undulating, traffic-free toll road to West Bay.

At 3 miles there is a long climb into Worlebury Woods then woodland paths and trails along the top before a long down hill section back to the start of the toll road for a second loop. After emerging from the woods for the second time the race heads back to towards the sea front for a lap of the Marine Lake, including the tidal causeway, then back down onto the beach for a short sprint to the finish.

It was a glorious day for running and the sea views from the toll road and the tidal causeway were quite spectacular. This event is a great day out and highly recommended for Stroud runners. Next year's event is 13 Feb 2011 - put the date in your diaries!

Durley Dozen - 14th Feb 2010
15-Feb-2010 18:00 PM
After a year away due to heavy snow and ice, one of the hardest multi terrain races in the Country, THE DURSLEY DOZEN, is back.

A beautiful day greeted the 346 participants in this years Dozen. Saturday evening's rain making an otherwise dry course slightly more slippery. The 12 mile race sets off very steeply up a road for 200 metres, and then ascends a woodland track to the top of Stinchcombe Hill. After a short run around the golf course, the route re-enters the woods (steep descent) before climbing (steeply) back out onto the hilltop. The next two miles are on flat and fast road. The course then follows an undulating woodland path leading to a steep and rough descent to the New Inn. A steep ascent then leads to the lunar landscape of Breakheart Quarry, followed by three miles of track through beechwoods. The final climb, the "Precipice", (almost overhanging: ropes are provided) brings the runners back onto the top of Stinchcombe Hill. From here, good views can be had of those still struggling up the hill. Two miles of grassland, track and finally road descend to the finish.

The total length of the course is almost exactly twelve miles with about 1600 feet of descent. There were 7 Stroud competitors in total with Jo Fifield putting in a good performance coming 5th lady overall, followed by Justin EcEvoy in 79th place and Jim Russell in 83rd place.

Stroud's Records Tumble!
15-Feb-2010 18:00 PM
Stroud and District AC sprint Star Jennie Batten 17 backed up her senior Bronze medal last weekend with a scorching indoor performance under lining her dominance in the U20 Ladies age group by easily winning the Combined South West and Midland Counties 200m title at the NIA in Birmingham. Jennie emphatic victory was by more than a 1.5 seconds, also setting a new club record.

Decathlete James Taylor showed he is in good shape taking on the throwers in the U17 men to win the South West Counties Shot Putt title and break the Club record.

Ben Coldray ran a blistering last 200m of the U20 Men 800m to claim the South West counties title, and set a new Club record.

12-Feb-2010 14:00 PM
Stroud and District AC sprint star 17 year old Jennie Batten who is the European U18 100m and 200m champion was selected for the Great Britian U20 sprint relay team before Christmas. Unfortunately she has had her training badly hampered since selection due to the bad weather and was desperately short of speed training. Jennie was keen to get as many races as possible to start her speed training for the National Championships later in February so she entered the Senior ladies 200m at the Birmingham Games. Jennie showed once again what a talent she is against a high quality field. Jennie progressed through the first round and through the semi Final and lined up with some of the top UK senior sprinters and finished the race with a senior Bronze medal to add to her burgeoning collection.

Mayhill Massacre - 7th Feb 2010
07-Feb-2010 16:00 PM
Stroud & District Athletic Club were well represented at the 4th Mayhill Massacre on Sunday 7th February with Stroud's Lee Rankin coming in 2nd place and Rob Gornall following in 3rd.

The course consists of an initial hill ascent (about 1000ft in 2 miles) with an excellent view from the top of Mayhill followed by ankle deep mud through forest trails, followed by an asscent followed by (if you are unluckly) knee deep shoe sucking mud \ clay, followed by another ascent at about 6.5 miles in thick clinging mud. The race is finished by a long 1 1/2 mile downhill descent to the finish. Despite tough running conditions everybody enjoyed the event.

The course was well marshalled with a very friendly atmosphere throughout. Not a race for beginners or those that don't like getting dirty! Luckly it didn't rain.
